I am directed by the Secretary of State for India

to refer to your letter, No.48607/08. of the 28th

December last, regarding the selection of an officer

with Indian experience to advise the Government of

Hong Kong in connection with the negotiations with the

Chinese Government for a working agreement in respect

of the British and Chinese sections of the Kowloon-

Canton railway.

In reply I am to state that the officer who is

considered both by this office and by the Government

of India to be most suitable for the purpose is Major

A. Bonham Carter, R.E,, whose last post in India was

that of Agent to the Madras Railway Company, in which

post he was drawing a salary of Rs.2,500 a month.

Major Bonham-Carter is at present on leave in
